Hearing is a hand drawn cartoon character recognizable by his large curved ears,
black sunglasses, and snow white skin. He appears in intentionally scuffed
MS Paint-style drawings.
The character is usually drawn with a confident or suspicious expression, as if
he is overhearing something important. This led to the associated phrase
"Hearing things", which is used as a caption or catchphrase when someone
thinks they are picking up on drama, secrets or hidden information.
Hearing was created privately by Funtern in September 2025 as a rough MS-Paint
style drawing. The design emphasized huge curved ears and simple, bold line art,
giving the character a strong silhouette that works well as a meme template.
Early versions were shared in small private circles before being posted online.
Users quickly noticed the oversized ears and started joking that the character
was "hearing things", which naturally turned into
the name of the character: Hearing.
The character spread quickly across meme communities, especially in spaces that
enjoy low effort or MS Paint-style edits. Hearing has been remixed into reaction
images, 4chan style edits, job scenarios, finance memes and parody panels.
Because the design is simple and easily redrawn, creators began experimenting
with different outfits, expressions and situations while keeping the iconic
big ears and sunglasses. This gave Hearing strong potential as a reusable
template character similar to Wojak's, soyjak's and Pepe's.
The phrase "Hearing things" is commonly paired with the character in captions
or image macros. It is typically used in situations where someone:
- Thinks they overheard gossip, drama or secret information
- Becomes paranoid about what others are saying
- Pretends not to listen while clearly listening to everything
- Reacts to off screen conversations, voice chats or Discord drama
In many edits, Hearing is placed in the background of a scene, smugly listening,
or zoomed in with his large ears highlighted to imply he catches even the
quietest conversations.
The phrase Hearing things could also be used before an announcement.
